What is the difference between Winter Relief and the Warming Center?
Winter Relief is a seasonal emergency shelter program that operates throughout the winter and provides overnight shelter, meals, social activities, and supportive services. The Warming Center is an emergency space that opens during extreme cold weather to provide temporary warmth and safety. The Warming Center does not provide cots, meals, or social activities.
What is the Housing First philosophy?
Housing First is an approach to ending homelessness that provides people with permanent housing first, without requiring sobriety, treatment, or other conditions, and then offers supportive services as needed. The idea is that people are better able to address mental health, substance use, or employment challenges after they have stable housing.
How is chronic homelessness defined?
Chronic homelessness means a person has been homeless for a long time (at least 1 year continuously, or repeatedly over several years) and has a disabling condition such as a serious mental illness, substance use disorder, or physical disability. The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) sets the definition.
What is affordable housing?
Affordable housing is housing that costs a person or family no more than 30% of their income, so they can still afford other basic needs like food, transportation, and healthcare.
What is emergency shelter?
Emergency shelter is short-term, temporary housing for people who are experiencing homelessness and need immediate, safe indoor shelter. It provides basic needs like a bed, protection from the elements, and sometimes meals and support services.
What is transitional housing?
Transitional housing is temporary housing that helps people move from homelessness to permanent housing. It usually includes supportive services like job help or case management and allows people to stay for a set period of time, often 6 months up to two years.
